“ART OF OKAIR SAZI”
Multan
is on of the ornamentation of Hinds/Leather (Okair Sazi) among the
crafts of Multan, “Okair Sazi” is the most popular. “Okair” is
Siryaki word which means “To Emboss” It is used for embossed designs
using special threads “Tila” on leather products specially “Khussa”.
This term is also known to refer the printer design which is
prepared on a paper using sharp needle. Sharp needle has different
size. Nearly 1 mm to 5mm. The design then is glued to upper whose
imprint is followed by embroidery to beautifully the footwear. The
design or imprint is made by unique pencil work on 30-40 sheet paper
bundles. This is then cut by sharp needle and pasted on the required
location.
Niaz
Ahmed is known as the master of this art. He has given new life to
the art and introduced it to world by opening new horizon in
“Okairmanship” such as making Holy references, poetry, quotations,
pictures, invitation letters, scenery views, letter pads, Hinah
designs and book titles not only on paper but also on leather,
artificial leather, plastic and tissue paper. This he open new
horizons in the field of “Okair Sazi”
Sharp
needle has different size like 1mm to 5mm. piece of rock is used for
sharpens the needle. Sharp needle is used for different designs.
Small sharp needle is used for small design and big sharp needle is
used for big design.
The size of one paper is about 16 × 18 cm
18 × 25 cm
20 × 28 cm
Smallest size 9 × 12 cm can make and biggest size 25 ×
36 cm is also made. Sharp needle is made according to the size of
paper.
Ustad
Niaz Ahmed’s brilliant and skillful student, Haqnawaz has bee under
training of Ustad since last 25 years and acquired masterly skills
in the art of “Okair Sazi”. This obedient student Haqnawaz has work
long hours and contributed his services in the struggle for
development and progress of the legendary art. He has proven himself
by introducing new crafts and received many awards. Now a days he is
working hard for the betterment of this historic and beautiful art
along with his craft shop at Multan Craft Bazar (Multan Craft
Market) in the historic and cultured capital of Pakistan.
